Matt Horton, Milken Institute, updated roundtable participants on the Milken Institute's regional recovery model to scale regional competitiveness through core competency investment and employer engagement.
Cherly Slobodian, CMTC, prepared an update on the COVID-19 activities of the California Manufacturing Technology Consortium, including resources available through their website. The $6.1 million CMTC was awarded from the CARES Act has allowed the organization to really expand outreach and technical assistance to the manufacturing sector throughout California.
Phil Vermeulin, advocate for small businesses and DVBEs, discussed three procurement issues, including the need to update the Target Area Contract Procurement Act incentive to better meet the challenges of COVID-19, add a microenterprise component to the small business procurement provisions for public works contracts, and reinstatement of a provision in perishable food contracts relating to minimum food purchases under the contract.
Betty Jo Toccoli, California Small Business Association, briefed the participants on three of the top issues her organization has hearing a lot about from small businesses, including the rising cost of insurance and potential lawsuits related to COVID-19, concerns over the rise in property taxes, and the impact of the California Supreme Court decision and legislation related to the status of independent contractors.
